Transforming construction canvas into bags and opportunities

Circular reuse of Necron construction materials

200 square metres. That’s how much construction canvas we use in the completion of a single turnkey warehouse project. What do you do with all those metres of tarp once the project is finished, as a sustainable, BREEAM-Excellent certified company?

van Hulley

Correct answer, you have them circular economy upcycled by VanHulley, where women distanced from the job market learn to make the most beautiful items. Result: the construction tarps are transformed into unique, fashionable bags, through which Necron contributes both socially and sustainably, supporting VanHulley’s mission.

Femke de Klerk, workshop leader at VanHulley, talks about the second life that is thus created – both for the Necron construction materials and the participants.

Building a future with reusable construction materials

‘At our workshop, women who want to take serious steps towards a better future undertake a learn-work programme,’ explains De Klerk. ‘Within a few weeks, you can already see the added value of this programme. The women emerge from their social isolation. We have a talent development space in the workshop. While the women create beautiful objects from reusable construction textiles, they relearn that they are allowed to dream.’

Social and sustainable thanks to construction tarps

‘We enjoy working with construction tarps like those from Necron,’ says Femke de Klerk. ‘Firstly, participants enjoy contributing to sustainable innovations, and thinking together about what we can make from a particular material fosters social connection. Designing a bag from a rigid construction tarp offers a lot of learning opportunities.’

‘In addition, companies like Necron fund the educational costs and talent development of these women. This is incredibly valuable for them and our society.’

From timidity to career stability

Workshop leader Femke de Klerk: ‘I am proud of what we achieve here. We succeed in creating sustainable products through socially driven projects. Our timid participants are making great strides towards permanent jobs.’

‘For example, 3 participants from last year are now studying full-time at the ROC community college. We are working to secure a permanent job for another participant. Every participant is so proud of the diplomas they achieve. So Necron can also be quite proud of what they achieve by upcycling their construction tarps.’
