Ridderkerk II: sustainable fruit and vegetable logistics centre for R&M Forwarding

State-of-the-art distribution centre.

With Ridderkerk I successfully completed and delivered to R&M Forwarding in Nieuw Rijerwaard the first pile has already been driven for Ridderkerk II, a 57,000 m2 logistics centre scheduled for handover in summer 2025.

These buildings are part of the Dutch Fresh Port, aiming to become the most sustainable fresh food logistics business park in Europe.

Both Ridderkerk I and Ridderkerk II will be used by R&M Forwarding. After the successful completion of Ridderkerk I in 2022, R&M Forwarding decided to strengthen its relationship with Necron Group by commissioning another state-of-the-art distribution centre.

The new 57,000 m2 company premises with photovoltaic solar panels will have a 35,000 m2 refrigerated warehouse, mezzanines, intermediate floors, offices and 70 loading docks. Necron is committed to using sustainable technology to make the large cold-storage centre as energy efficient as possible. In fact, high-quality bio-based materials are one of the components that helped make this a BREEAM Excellent certification building.

Various companies are working together to construct the future-proof building. The project is a real team effort with contributions from Ten Brinke Bouw, ArchitectenLab, Gemeenschappelijke Regeling Nieuw Reijerwaard, the municipality of Ridderkerk and Drees & Sommer (a consulting, planning and project management company). We’ve all worked together before and are confident we’ll once again deliver an excellent logistics centre that we can all be proud of.

According to Gert-Jan Metselaar, head of Gemeenschappelijke Regeling Nieuw Reijerwaard, the position of the Dutch Fresh Port is strengthened by the new warehouse. Metselaar says that with the Necron Group as a development partner and R&M Forwarding’s investment in a second warehouse, the Dutch Fresh Port has a solid base for the future.

Dutch Fresh Port, a hotspot for companies specializing in food and agricultural products, is near the Port of Rotterdam and easy to reach by motorway. Through projects like this one, Necron helps its partners expand their businesses sustainably while boosting local economies and developing areas with high potential.
